Weather, Wind and Waves in Marsa Alam

Marsa Alam is relatively exposed to wind. Since the coastline is relatively straight, the prevailing Northern winds can travel long distances, creating 1+ m waves that may hit the ‘house reefs’ directly and make snorkeling impossible.

Best Advice: Choose a hotel with a ‘Bay’ (often named Marsa something) rather than an outer reef – especially if you are a beginner. Bays offer much better protection from the winds and waves and ultimately more days where snorkeling is possible.

Water Temp: The water here in the South is the warmest in Egypt, often staying 1-2°C higher than the North year-round.”
