Hurghada is a fantastic year-round destination. While the winter months require a bit more neoprene, the summer months offer some of the most comfortable snorkeling conditions in the world.
Understanding the weather is key to a great experience. While the fish are always there, the wind and water temperature determine how long you can stay in the water and how clear the visibility will be.
Hurghada offers great snorkeling. It is famous for its offshore islands and shallow lagoons, which provide excellent protection from the waves.
Water Temperatures in Hurghada
The water temperature in Hurghada follows a predictable seasonal cycle.
- Summer (June–September): Tropical 26°C to 28°C. Perfect for long sessions in just a rash guard.
- Winter (December–March): Refreshing 21°C to 23°C. At this time, a 3mm or 5mm wetsuit is highly recommended to stay warm.

Reading the Wind
In Hurghada, the wind almost always blows from the North/Northwest. This is actually a benefit during the scorching summer heat as it provides a cooling breeze, but for snorkelers, it’s all about finding the “Lee-side” (the sheltered side).
The Island Effect: One of the best things about Hurghada is the abundance of islands like Giftun, Magawish, and Abu Minqar – or hotels in sheltered bays like Makadi Bay.
Even on a windy day, the boat captains can usually find a sheltered spot in bays or behind an island where the water remains calm and crystal clear.
Visibility and Tides
Visibility in Hurghada is generally excellent, often exceeding 20 meters. However, strong winds can occasionally stir up sand in bays and lagoons.
